Natsu-Yasumi

03 Sunday Aug 2008

Natsu-Yasumi (夏休み) – summer break.

The one-week-break is almost over. I’m not sure if I actually took advantage of it though.  But what the hell, kanya-kanyang topak na lang yan. Here’s the play-by-play of what I did during those wake-up-at-noon days:

July 27, 2008 – Sunday

Watched Veronica Mars before going to the company annual dinner.

July 28, 2008 – Monday

Stayed at home with Veronica Mars and just basically bummed around.

July 29, 2008 – Tuesday

Had this mini-Wii-Party at Guia and Jac’s place. Had fun with the Wii and the non-stop laughing and the  good old asaran and of course, Ish’s drink of the moment — Cassis Orange. Didn’t sleep the whole night because of all that.

July 30, 2008 – Wednesday

Because I got home at around 6am and I didn’t sleep the previous night, I was knocked out most of the day. The entire time I was awake though, I cleaned my room. Yes, really.

July 31, 2008 – Thursday

if (sweldo.Exist()==TRUE) {
GoTo(Fuchu);
Eat(Kare-Kare);
GoHome();
}

August 1, 2008 – Friday

Went to the Immigration Office in Shin-Yurigaoka with Ish-chan, Vanush, and Benny for our re-entry permits. Dragged Ish to Machida to buy the airbeds. Wooooo! Now I can sleep a little better.

NyorNyor-Hodai with Absinthe and the NyorNyor Gang @ Bubaigawara. Shet, sabog na sabog. Haha, well … di pa naman, pero malapit na. Tumigil lang talaga ako.

August 2, 2008 – Saturday

Haberday, Nikki Noodles!

Beaching experience with bitchin’ hangover at Kuganuma-Kaigan. Ampanget ng beach, pero beach pa rin yun. Went to Guia and Jac’s after for Jac’s birthday celeb party. Absinthe plus Chu-hi naman ngayon. Basag na naman.

August 3, 2008 – Sunday

Malamang lang sa hindi tulog ako buong araw. 6am na ko umuwi eh.

Waaaaaah! Tapos na natsu-yasumi. May pasok na bukas. *Sobs* Pero di bale, may Obon-Yasumi pa next week, yeaaaaah!

Sith Lord: Omigod, na-ti-tears-tears ako. I’m soooooo proud of you, young padawan. You’re learning really fast.

Sith Lord: Omigod, lalo akong naiyak. (to padawan) Di niya na-gets! My gash.

Hello? Hello?

Are you there?

Hello?

I just have this one silly question.

What’s taking you so long?

Really — what?

———————-

This is just me losing my touch. I can’t seem to write my usual crap nowadays. Oh well, whatever. As if that bothers me :p

PS — Still on my Veronica Mars Season 1 Marathon. San-san (my Sansa E270 player) conked out in the middle of Episode 17 earlier. Bummer.

PPS — Strong quake last night (it is now early morning, you know), magnitude 6.8 that lasted more than 20 seconds. I was shaking in my, uh, room socks.

PPPS — Brawl in The Palace of Auburn Hills. Haven’t watched the vid yet (Veronica Mars muna hehe) but I read that Candace Parker and Delisha Milton-Jones of the L.A. SpOrks and Plenette Pierson and Asst. Coach Rick Mahorn of the Detroit Thugs -este- Shock were ejected. Nasty. The league does not need things like this.

You know those people who can predict when change is coming in their life? I’m not one of them. Change has a way of just walking up and punching me in the face.

“At this moment there are 6470818671 people in the world, some are running scared, some are coming home, some tell lies to make it through the day, others are just not facing the truth, some are evil men at war with good, and some are good struggling with evil, six billion people in the world, six billion souls, and sometimes, all you need is one.”

– Peyton (One Tree Hill)

I slept all day and now I’m wide awake. Good luck sa body clock. Wala na rin ako sense mag-isip wahahaha. Oh well, fafel. Sana makatulog akow bago mag-appear na naman yang nagmamagandang sun na yan ang init-init tuloy.

Jumping Over the Cliff with the Rest of the Lemmings

Lemmings jump off a cliff to what — their death? Pretty damn senseless, I say.

But who am I to criticize? Hell if I know what pleasure they get from plunging into the (possibly) rocky waters below. So I’ll shut up and stew about this on my own.

Hmmm. Yeah. I think that’s better.

########

Ha, but the whole suicidal lemming thing is actually just a myth. Lemmings migrate in scores and those at the front of the pack just get pushed off the cliff because all those at the back are in such a hurry to move move move move. But hey, knowing the actual fact renders the whole thing boring. So let’s just pretend that they actually want to jump off a cliff ten thousand feet high and they do that — I dunno, just for fun?

Yeah. I think that’s better.

Can’t write anymore. So I resort to micro-blogging. Heehee.

① I missed an awesome game this morning. Seattle @ Phoenix with the Storm winning and LJ racking up 25 points. But gone are the days that I would actually get up at the crack of dawn (read: 4am) just to catch a game that wasn’t even on webcast. But still, it was Phoenix. Bummer. Great win (a road win at that — home game with scores of camp kids screaming at a high pitch) though.

② I’m two days behind in uploading my Project 365 shots. Sue me, whatever. I have the right to get tired of it, too, you know.

③ Sooooo damn tired. But it’s Friday. So I guess, everything’s gonna be alright. If all things can be simplified that way (if friday then it’s okay blah blah, invent your own logic, lowly peons heehee), people don’t have to worry about losing their minds all the freakin’ time.

④ “Bawal ka magreklamo, kasi isa ka pang sobrang malabo din” — or something to that effect. Oh, you know me, I complain A LOT. But you know that I wouldn’t change a thing, right? And yeah, that statement is so so soooo true.

⑤ Windows task scheduler + Audacity (or some other recording tool). Use ’em next time the Stormies play early or swing to the East Coast. (Thanks, Moogs!)

⑥ The last three spots for the US Basketball WNT were filled. Swin Cash was notified last week that she wouldn’t be on that list. Indeed. The roster is now complete with the addition of Delisha Milton-Jones (F LA SpOrks — UGH!), Tamika Catchings (F Indiana Fever), and Kara Lawson (G Sacramento Monarchs). Well, at least they let in a point guard to help Sue. Good luck to the US Women though, Australia’s pretty pumped up and hello, they got LJ! Who to root for — that’s gonna be my biggest problem come Olympics time wahahaha.

⑦ Hanging out while plastered on the cement isn’t what it’s cracked up to be — I thought this would equate to the end of the world, but it actually didn’t. I dunno what’s going on. (O eh ano naman ang bago dun?)

⑧ OMFG, I’M GOING TO MISS THE GAME AGAINST THE SPORKS ON SUNDAY! Depressing waaaaah!

“This platform is made of cement. I wonder how it would actually feel if you fell face-flat on it — from, say, about 100 meters above ground level.”

I can’t compute the Vf right now but if this stays in my mind, I might just solve it when I reach the office.

— o —-

“Here comes the 926. Is this car gonna be near the stairs at Shin-Yurigaoka? I should have known this a long time ago but I just really have no idea.”

— o —-

“Doors … closing doors … opening doors … knocking on doors … answering the knocks on doors …”

I’ve started reading “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman and I hope I’ll finish it so I’d have something more concrete to say about Doors. It’s a promising story though so I SHOULD really read it. Blah, I said that about The Hours and look at me now — not even halfway through the blasted thing.

“Events are cowards. They do not occur singly … instead they would run in packs and leap at you all at once.”

[EXT. HOTEL MONACO – FRONT SIDEWALK – DAY — CONTINUOUS]

(Standing down below on the sidewalk in front of the Hotel Monaco, GRISSOM looks up at the roof and speaks into the walkie-talkie. Behind him, a large crowd of spectators gather just beyond the crime scene tape.)

GIL GRISSOM: (to radio) All right, Nick, standing by for Operation Norman. Let him fly.

(The first crash dummy “body” flies off of the rooftop and crashes to the
sidewalk in front of GRISSOM with a thud.)

SPECTATOR (MALE): Oh!

(The large crowd of spectators applaud. GRISSOM looks up and around at them, surprised by their reaction.)

(The second crash dummy flies off of the rooftop and onto the sidewalk below. The crowd cheers.)

(The third and final crash dummy flies off of the rooftop and lands with a thud. The crowd applauds.)

(GRISSOM raises his hand and acknowledges them as he walks toward the dummies.)

GIL GRISSOM: Yes, yes.

(GRISSOM raises his camera.)

GIL GRISSOM: Norman “pushed”.

(He takes pictures of the dummy. He turns to snap photos of the second dummy.)

GIL GRISSOM: Norman “jumped”.

(GRISSOM takes pictures of the third dummy.)

GIL GRISSOM: Norman “fell”.

SARA SIDLE: (o.s.) Wouldn’t you if you were married to Mrs. Roper?

(At the sound of her voice, GRISSOM puts the camera down. Behind him, SARA puts her bag down on the ground, a huge grin on her face.)

GIL GRISSOM: I don’t even have to turn around. Sara Sidle.

SARA SIDLE: That’s me. Still tossing simulation dummies? There are other ways to tell, you know?

GIL GRISSOM: How? Computer simulation? No thanks. I’m a scientist I like to see it. Newton dropped the apple, I drop dummies.

SARA SIDLE: You’re old school.

GIL GRISSOM: Exactly. And this guy was pushed.

It’s actually the first time Sara Sidle appears in CSI.

Kaito Nakamura. Lying on the ground. Bloodied after a hooded someone ran at him and they fell off the rooftop ledge together.

Heroes. Season 2. Episode 1.

“Something unexpected.”

“When we embrace what lies within, our potential has no limit. The future is filled with promise; the present rife with expectation. When we deny our instinct, and struggle against our deepest urges, uncertainty begins. Where does this path lead? When will the changes end? Is this transformation a gift or a curse? For those who fear what lies ahead, the most important question of all: Can we ever really change what we are?”

– Heroes Season 1 Episode 13 “The Fix”

— o —-

“You threw me off of a thirty story building! If I didn’t regenerate, I’d be dead!”

“You could’ve flown! Listen, if you hadn’t worked this one out, you’d’ve been hopeless anyway. And I’d have defused the biggest bomb ever.”

– Peter, Claude

Season 1 Episode 14 “Distractions”

— o —-

Figurative toss coin.

Heads — I’ll continue reading Gaiman.

Tails — I’ll succumb to the call of Morpheus.

Flip.

Tails.

Oh well. I hope someone (Ish? Just?) wakes me up in Shin-Yokohama.

— o —-

“Shin-Yokohama desu … Shin-Yokohama desu …”

I wake.

Oh crap, is it Shin-Yoko already?

Ugh.

Debounce!

debounce, kilcher~isms, switch

(1) Debounce (v) – To remove the small ripple of current that forms when a mechanical switch is pushed in an electrical circuit and makes a series of short contacts. [ Source ]

(2) Electrical contacts in mechanical pushbutton switches often make and break contact several times when the button is first pushed. A debouncing circuit removes the resulting ripple signal, and provides a clean transition at its output. [ Source ]

Switches can do some really odd things. Most engineers learn this dirty little secret soon after connecting a switch or a relay to a digital system. Switches don’t make and break cleanly on the time scales of digital systems. Instead, a typical switch makes multiple transitions during the tens of milliseconds required to open or close, due to effects that include age, operating inertia, mechanical design, and the microscopic condition of the switch-contact surfaces. Commonly called “switch bounce,” this behavior is an inescapable fact of life. [ Source ]

Now, those damn bounces can be easily taken care of using Software Debouncing (never mind the overvoltage spikes, electostatic discharge, and other transients). I remember we did this in CoE 115 (ya know, that subject that rendered me sleepless for many many nights) before. You have to introduce some sort of delay (say, a few milliseconds) before getting the voltage value of the switch. That way you’re sure if it’s the right value and not just some transient one.

Anyway, it’s like this: sometimes a switch is flipped or pressed in your head and a thought is suddenly there. That thought may be a temporary one (transient) or maybe it’s just an impulsive urge or whatever. Or maybe it’s the real thing — the one that infinitely loops inside your head and you forgot to put a “break;” statement in there somewhere so it’s there, just there, floating in your always-low-programmed-mind and it’s never-ending. The only way to make sure that that thought is real is to wait it out (for like 5 to 10 minutes — yeah, that works with me, coz I’m like fickle-minded as hell). Now, if that singular thought still lingers after a day (or a week, or a month, or God forbid — many many many months!), then maybe it’s the real value, maybe it’s The Real Deal.

Errrr, having said all that … sooooooo … … what now?

Hahaha. I say, DEBOUNCE, Kilcher, DEBOUNCE!

EXAMPLE DESU:

Sa train, papauwi:
[#] Parang gusto ko bumili ng desktop.
[~] Go.
[#] Pagkauwing-pagkauwi mag-customize na ko.
[~] Hay naku, dapat pagkatapos mo, orderin mo agad.
[~] Pag pinapatagal mo, di natutuloy eh.
[#] Eh sorry namaaaaaan. Fickle-minded. At saka maiksi ang attention span.

Pagkauwi ng bahay, nagcustomize na agad, hanggang sa antaas na ng presyong inabot:
[#] Naku, impulse ito.
[=] Hindi yan, bumili ka naaaa. Diablo 3 rin yan no.

After 15 minutes…
[#] Lumipas na ang urge.
[=] Bili ka naaaa.
[#] Di rin naman ako makakapag-Diablo 3. Wala akong oras.
[=] Magkakaron ka niyan ng oras.
[#] Hindi na muna siguro…

The next morning…
[=] Alam mo, makakamura ka kung mag-assemble na lang.
[#] Hmmmm…
(Pause)
[#] Oo nga ano …

Lumagpas na ng isang araw, iniisip ko pa rin. So what now?

Hahaha. I say, DEBOUNCE, Kilcher, DEBOUNCE!

PS — Marami pang examples, hindi lang yan. Meron pa ngang months na ang Δt no 🙂 Pero ayoko na isa-isahin kasi hindi ako matatapos for sure. Basta ang masasabi ko lang ay …

DEBOUNCE, KILCHER, DEBOUNCE!

[ MORPHEUS ]
It is sometimes a mistake to climb;
it is always a mistake never even to make the attempt.
If you do not climb, you will not fall.
This is true.
But is it that bad to fail, that hard to fall?
.
.
.
Sometimes you wake, and sometimes, yes, you die.
But there is a third alternative.

[ TODD ]
And sometimes, when you fall, you learn to fly.
