Ume no Kouen

I was hoping to see the whole Ume no Kouen (Plum Flower Park) in Yoshi-no-Baigou, Ome, covered in pinks and whites. Alas, this was the scene that greeted me.

Boo!

But anyway, if the weather is great and my lethargy decides to take a break next Sunday, I *might* just go back there to finally shoot me some ume blossoms — probs more blossoms that I will ever handle, unlike the one below:

Ume no Kouen

On to other things:

* Torah Bright got the gold in the Women’s Halfpipe competition in the OGs. It was brilliant! Too bad neither 2006 Gold Medalist Hannah Teter nor 2002 Gold Medalist Kelly Clark could top her technical stunts. They, however, shared the podium with her as Teter got the silver, and Clark (who was so amusing with her karaoke~ing before her runs) got the bronze.

* Shaun White is awesome. ‘Nuff said.

* The Storm will have an exhibition game with Phoenix on May 2 at Key Arena. Can’t wait!

Jacobellis DQ'ed at SBX

Lindsey Jacobellis flubbed 4 years ago in Torino, was almost guaranteed the gold but showed off near the finish, grabbed her board during the last jump and ended up falling on her ass, while Swiss Tanja Frieden swooshed past for the gold.

She waited four years for redemption at the OG’s but it was all to no avail. Jacobellis, one of the dominant boarders of the decade, landed awkwardly after the first big jump in the semifinal race for Women’s Snowboard Cross. She went right, then left, and collided with a gate, then spun off the course. It was an auto-DQ. Moment over. Ugh.

When asked what happened, she answered:

From Yahoo Sports:

It was simple: On a course shrouded in fog all day and with some snow that, in Jacobellis Ewords, “felt like mashed potatoes, Eshe bit it. She caught huge air on the jump, enough that she almost landed on the board of Canadian Maelle Ricker. Jacobellis ended up leaning on her front foot heading into one of the snowboardcross course’s hairpin turns, where anything but optimal balance is an invitation to eat snow.

When a piece of the gate snapped into the air, Jacobellis lifted her arms in anguish before smacking her helmet. The jumbo screen along the side of the mountain stayed with her for a few extra moments, forgetting the race and focusing on the woman who can’t conquer the Olympics.

Even worse, after she crossed the finish line, Jacobellis needed to go down to the ski lift and jump a chair back to the top. The Small Final beckoned. It was an inconvenience, an indignity and an insult, and the ride was the longest of her life. Jacobellis looked down on the mountain, back to the fans, surveyed the entire scene. She had blown it. She had blown it again.

Anyway, in every race there’s a winner and there are losers. Jacobellis lost. Whatever. It’s not like she’s going around blaming anyone. Let’s move on.

On to the half-pipes yeah \o/

WEST VANCOUVER, British Columbia(AP)—Four years ago, U.S. moguls skier Hannah Kearney sat in the stands in Turin after collapsing and placing a dismal 22nd in the qualifying round as Canadian Jenn Heil proudly climbed atop the podium for gold.

…

Kearney put up a scintillating run in front of the heavily pro-Canadian crowd.

Moments after Heil put up a score of 25.69 to catapult into first place, Kearney put together the run of a lifetime. The skier who admits she was once afraid of being upside down completed a backflip and a 360-degree turn before blazing across the finish line with the fastest time of the night.

Podium finishes:
・Hannah Kearney  (US) – Gold
・Jenn Heil (Canada) – Silver
・Shannon Bahrke (US) – Bronze

***

Anyone else wanna see more of that 18-year-old high-flyer from Canada? Frakkin’ awesome that Chloe Dufour-Lapointe is. Too bad she caught a wedge in her final run and she fumbled somewhere (was that her or Heather McPhie?).

***

Also got to watch Men’s Luge but I got bored.

***

Simon Ammann of Switzerland won the Normal Hill Jump gold.

***

Apolo Ohno got silver in the 5000m Speed Skating event. Will watch it in a few after the Women’s Moguls video I got off EZTV. Yay EZTV!

***

I can’t wait for the Snowboarding Events. Here’s hoping Hannah Teter and Lindsay Jacobellis are up for great performances.

Snowboarding+Grand+Prix+Day+1+55cWtOqZSBpl hannah_teter

Been watching the opening ceremonies of Vancouver 2010. Now, now, I enjoy watching the summer games but after dabbling with snowboarding for the past couple of years I kinda sorta had a little interest in the winter games.

But between this impromptu extraction surgery and these really annoying throat allergies, I’m forced to sit out this winter season. But gaaaad, I really miss snowboarding, especially the fact that (almost) everyone is going and gaaah, it just sucks to be the one left behind, y’know.

But whatever, I’ve moved on.

Really.

Via Storm Tracker:

Okay, so, WNBA.com is choosing its Photo of the Year. The first round of the voting gives fans  the chance to choose a photo for each specific team. Currently, they’re highlighting the Seattle Storm. So, Stormies, come on, let’s go vote!

I’m having a hard time choosing between the two below:

“Team Line-up”

passion

“Passion”

I like the first one (coz I’m crazy about wide shots lately) but I also really, really, really like the second photo coz the photographer practically just nailed Sue’s passion for the game with that shot. Plus add to that the fact that I’m such a (or used to be such a) rabid Sue Bird fan LOL.  Anyway, these awesome photos were taken by Terrence Vaccaro.

I say, not bad. Put away the loss at Indy (which I completely didn’t wake up to coz I’m putting my health over basketball addiction nowadays), I think we’re on the right direction.

The team hasn’t still gelled that well but it’ll come in time.

・Tanisha Wright finally playing what she does best — awesome defense and not point-guarding. Now we can only hope PeeWee Johnson stays healthy to provide substantial help to Sue.

・Sue Bird — Bird, Bird, Bird, Biiiiiiiird is the word. Seriously, if ever she retires I would be really depressed. And lol at someone from Stormfans.org, if only we could clone Birdy and put Birdy1 at point guard and Birdy2 at shooting guard, that would be freaking awesome.

・I hope Swin stays healthy and finally free from the back and knee problems. Awesome defense against Augustus during the win over the Lynx btw.

・Lauren Jackson. ‘Nuff said. Thank you for staying in Seattle. ^__^
