Fallen for you
Did you ever see me,
Watching from periphery?
I was playing another game
I hoped you catch on all the same.

But I was wrong, so wrong
That was just another song you wrote, for another girl
And I hoped a day could be
When you’d write a song for me.

#####

I just watched High Fidelity and my mind’s a little messy right now so I don’t think I can blog about that. I’ll just post this song instead.  Someone already told me about this months ago but I just re-discovered it now after watching the movie and checking out the soundtrack. It’s awesome in a woe-is-me-emo-kid kinda way.

hans albert, münchhausen's trilemma, the big bang theory

Leonard: What do you mean, you’re moving out? Why?

Sheldon: There doesn’t have to be a reason.

Leonard: Yeah, there kinda does.

Sheldon: Not necessarily. This is a classic example of Münchhausen’s Trilemma. Either the reason is predicated on a series of sub-reasons leading to an infinite regression, or it tracks back to arbitrary axiomatic statements, or it’s ultimately circular, i.e. I’m moving out because I’m moving out.

Leonard: I’m still confused.

Sheldon: Leonard, I don’t see how I could have made it any simpler.

– The Big Bang Theory, 2×01 “The Bad Fish Paradigm”

#####

The next time someone rebuts me that there’s a reason (however whacked that maybe) for everything when I don’t really believe there’s one, I have an explanation ready.

Münchhausen’s Trilemma, people, Münchhausen’s Trilemma.

(1) All justifications in pursuit of certain knowledge have also to justify the means of their justification and doing so they have to justify anew the means of their justification. Therefore there can be no end. We are faced with the hopeless situation of ‘infinite regression’. It is progress ad infinitum — all proof requires some further supporting proof, and so on to infinity.

For example, reasonOne is backed up by reasonTwo; reasonTwo is backed up by reasonThree; reasonThree is backed up by reasonFour … and so on and so forth.

[x] Why d’you have to buy a new pc?
[y] Because my current one cannot support the apps that I need to run.
[x] Why can’t it support those apps?
[y] Because it’s so slow.
[x] Why is it slow?
[y] Because its processor is old.
[x] Why is the processor —
[y] — OMG, STOP ASKING ALREADY!

(2) One can justify with a circular argument, but this sacrifices its validity.

Define circular: it’s the beginning of the end of the beginning of the end …

Like when asked, “why do you do that thing you do?”, you answer, “because I do that thing that I do.” And like what Sheldon told Leonard in dialogue, “I’m moving out because I’m moving out.” Or to continue with my example above, “I’m buying a PC because I’m buying a PC.”

I’m not sure if we can consider the following an example though:

[x] Why are you here?
[y] Because I’m not there.
[x] Why are you not there?
[y] Because I’m here.

(3) One can stop at self-evidence or common sense or fundamental principles or speaking ‘ex cathedra’ (Papal Infallibity) or at any other evidence, but in doing so the intention to install certain justification is abandoned. It means you’ll have to have a break of searching at a certain point, which indeed appears  principally feasible, but would mean a random suspension of the principle of sufficient reason.

[x] Why are you buying a pc?
[y] Because my current one’s old ergo it’s slow and annoying as hell.

*** I know I’m hasty generalizing with the old = slow thing but I’m too lazy to think of other examples right now.

Well, I didn’t wake up in time for that Mt. Fuji-Viewing Grape-Picking Wine-Tasting Tour.

Boohoohoohoo.

I spent about 4 hours sulking on my bed (oh so comfortable airbed), which prolly was the main reason why I didn’t wake up at 4 freakin’ AM (the bed, not the sulking).

And then, at 1130~ish (JST), the Storm hosted the visiting Minnesota Lynx. And for most of the game, they were being massacred by Seimone Augustus, Lindsey Harding, Candace Wiggins, and Anna DeForge. But then during the 3Q, Sue Bird (0 for 4 during the first half) keyed in about 10 points in a heart-stopping run that chipped down the Lynx lead until eventually we got the game. Sue Bird dropped 22 monster points again. When will the dotcom people ever see her as a huge candidate for that prestigious award?

BTW, there was a scary moment in the game where Sheryl Swoopes went up to block Candace Wiggins’ shot and came down on the floor — and didn’t get up for quite a while. A stretcher was brought out and my God, the 9000~ish that attended the record-setting game (for most wins in a season in franchise history) fell eerily quiet. I just read from the Storm Blog that Swoopes was unconscious for a few seconds but came to and recognized everyone around her. Good thing it was just a concussion. I thought something happened to her back, or head, or neck, or whatever. Kevin Pelton reports that Swoopes is fine.

21 wins 10 losses – best conference record in franchise history. 15 wins 1 loss – best home record in franchise history (and prolly the league, I just haven’t checked yet). We’re atop the Western Conference and if we continue playing like this, the chance to win that trophy is looking really really good. And gads, LJ isn’t there. I can’t imagine what’ll happen to the Storm when she gets back from surgery. Freakin’ awesome, this team is.

Okay so the good things don’t end there. I now think that the universe must be conspiring to make me happy and feel better about missing the trip (that I was waiting for for weeks, mind you). I ain’t gonna diss Paulo Coelho today. Some other time maybe.

After the Storm game I had to figure out how to watch the 2008 UAAP Cheerdance Competition. I’ve always watched that contest since I was in freshman year (whoa, it feels like eons already). Last year I missed out on one of the best performances by UP in ages because I was stuck recuperating my lungs inside a hospital in Chofu.

So anyway, thanks to Lau who told me to get TFC so I could watch the competition (because I’m stuck here and not with the gang in the trip), I was able to witness the performances. And wow, I mean, wow. I admit that UP’s routine wasn’t perfectly clean but man, there’s only so much oomph that one can handle and the UP Pep Squad brought it, really brought it. The concept was just whoa, and I like the theme, and the music (pinikpikan) and aaargh, it feels pretty good to be a UP grad right now.

Why?

Because we freakin’ won, that’s why!

I’m saving the commentary for later when the fog inside my head clears. I’m just happy that the UP Pep Squad won. Here’s their routine btw:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkIfsBvvvac

So anyway, I glanced outside my window and it is raining hard (complete with thunder and lightning very very frightening) and I just thought that, okay fine, I feel a whole lot better already, universe. Thank you very much for this day. 🙂

ETA: A much much better view of the routine [ here ].

5 Centimeters Per Second (秒速5センチメートル, Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru?), subtitled “a chain of short stories about their distance.” is a 2007 Japanese animated feature film by Makoto Shinkai. The film was finished on January 22, 2007. The first part of the film was debuted on Yahoo! Japan as streaming video to Yahoo! Premium members from 16 February to 19 February 2007. On March 3, 2007, the full length featured film had its theatrical premiere at Cinema Rise in Shibuya, Tokyo. The film consists of three segments: ŌkashŁE/em> (桜花抁E, Cosmonaut (コスモナウチE, and Byōsoku 5 Senchimētoru (秒送Eセンチメートル), totaling about an hour of runtime. As in Shinkai’s previous works, Tenmon composes for this film’s soundtrack. The DVD was released on 19 July 2007.

Makoto Shinkai had expressed that, unlike his past works, there would be no fantasy or science fiction elements in this film. Instead, the feature film would attempt to present the real world from a different perspective. Makoto’s film gives a realistic view of the struggles many face against: time, space, people, and love. The title 5 Centimeters Per Second comes from the speed at which cherry blossoms petals fall, petals being a metaphorical representation of humans, reminiscent of the slowness of life and how people often start together but slowly drift into their separate ways.[1]

“At this moment there are 6470818671 people in the world, some are running scared, some are coming home, some tell lies to make it through the day, others are just not facing the truth, some are evil men at war with good, and some are good struggling with evil, six billion people in the world, six billion souls, and sometimes, all you need is one.”

Schrödinger’s Cat

28 Wednesday May 2008

Schrödinger’s cat, often called a paradox, is a thought experiment devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger around 1935.

Anyway, it’s like this: a cat is placed in a sealed box with a sealed vial of poison that will break open at an uncertain time. Since no one knows when or if the poison is released, until the box is opened, the cat is thought of as both alive and dead. One can only pick a state — dead or alive — when the box is finally opened and the cat is seen.

It’s like … hmmm … maybe it’s like when you like someone and you are not sure if they like you back or not and you haven’t even opened the box — crossed a line, dropped hints, told them, asked them out, argh, whatever else analogy you can think of — what that something between you and that someone can be actually thought of as REAL and IMAGINARY, THERE and NOT-THERE, FACT and FANTASY blah-blah-blah-yakkity-blah. Not until you take that risk, tell them how you feel, and find out once and for all what the heck is going on around here, will you know IF THE CAT IS ALIVE OR NOT.

Right?

###########################

Blame The Big Bang Theory for this. It filled my morning and evening train rides with entertainment but rendered me unsociable since my friends couldn’t talk to me what with my ears covered with my gigantic headphones. I don’t care though if I looked like an idiot desperately trying to prevent myself from laughing. Ugh. Anyway, I already finished this season and will be waiting for the next so y’all can have my attention from here onwards — all the other TV shows have gone into hiatus anyway. Bummer.
